English to Láadan, Dictionary, 2021
Screen-printed at ESAD, Matosinhos
160 x 120 mm, 62 pp.
This project celebrates the power of language and typography
in shaping culture and society. Inspired by the gynocentric
constructed language Láadan, an English to Láadan dictionary
was designed. Láadan is a woman-centered constructed language created by Suzette Haden Elgin in 1982, designed to
counter male-centered language limitations on women.
The selected typeface, designed by Benedetta Bovani, emphasizes the importance of representation in
design. This dictionary was created as part of a workshop
on Language and Typography Policies and Science Fiction, coordinated by Thomas Spallek.
